Frequently asked questions
Reaching out for the first time comes with questions — about how we work, what it costs, and whether we're the right fit. Here are some answers to the ones we hear most.
Getting started
What reaching out actually looks like, from the first consultation to your first session.
How do I get started?
It starts with a free 30-minute consultation. We talk through what's going on and what you want to change. You get a feel for how we work. If it's a fit, we match you with the right team member and book your first session. Nothing to commit to before then.
What happens in the consultation?
You tell us what brought you here. We tell you honestly whether we can help and who on our team fits best. You leave knowing your next step — even if that step is somewhere other than here.
Is the consultation free?
Yes. No fee, no obligation, no pressure to book after. We'd rather you start with a clear picture than a quick yes.
How do you decide who I'll work with?
After your consultation, we place you with a practitioner who's a good fit for what you're working on and how you like to work. When more than one is available, we point you toward the strongest fit. Either way, every member of the team is held to the same standard — so you're in good hands from the first session.
I'm reaching out for my child — where do I start?
The same place: the free consultation. Many parents make the first call, and that's exactly how it should work. We'll talk with you about what you're seeing, then figure out the right way to bring your son or daughter into the conversation.
What if therapy hasn't worked for me before?
That's common, and it's worth saying out loud in your consultation. A poor fit, the wrong approach, or care that felt generic can all leave you skeptical. We'll be honest about whether we can do better — and why.
Do I have to be in crisis to come here?
No. Many of the people we work with are doing well by most measures and want to do better — sharper focus, less pressure, a clearer head. You don't need a reason that sounds bad enough.
What if my child doesn't want to come in?
This is one of the most common things we hear — and it's workable. The best first step is a short call to talk through your specific situation and a few strategies for getting started.
How we work
Who we work with, what we help with, and how the work tends to go.
What's the difference between therapy and mental performance coaching?
Therapy works through what holds you back — anxiety, avoidance, the patterns that keep you stuck. Mental performance coaching sharpens how you show up under pressure — focus, consistency, confidence when it counts. Many clients want both, and our team is trained to move between the two as you need.
Who do you work with?
Three groups, mainly: young adults and families, high performers and professionals, and athletes and teams. Different starting points, same standard of care.
What ages do you work with?
From middle school through adulthood. With younger clients, the work often includes parents. With adults, it's built around your goals and your life.
What kinds of challenges do you help with?
Anxiety, depression, and avoidance. Pressure that won't switch off. Focus, organization, and follow-through. The strain of performing at a high level while holding everything else together. If you're not sure it's "a real problem," the consultation is the place to find out.
What makes Valiance different from other practices?
Our clinicians aren't only therapists — they've competed, coached, and led in demanding settings themselves. That means you get someone who understands the work and the world you're navigating. We also hold a standard for how care should feel, start to finish. None of this is left to chance.
Will my family be part of the work?
Sometimes, especially with younger clients. Change tends to hold when the people around you shift too, not just you. When family or parent coaching makes sense, we'll say so and explain why. It's part of the work, not an add-on.
Do you prescribe medication?
Not at this time. We focus on therapy and mental performance coaching. If medication may help, we'll coordinate with a prescriber so your care stays connected.
Insurance & payment
Straight answers on cost, insurance, and what your fee covers.
Why don't you take insurance?
So your care answers to you, not an insurer. No session caps. No diagnosis required on your record. No limits on how we work or how long. It lets us hold the standard we built the practice around.
Can I use out-of-network benefits?
Often, yes. Many plans reimburse part of the cost for out-of-network care. We give you the paperwork to submit, and you handle reimbursement directly with your insurer.
What does it cost?
Fees depend on the service and who you work with. We'll confirm your exact fees before your first session, so there are no surprises.
What am I actually paying for?
More than the time in the room. Your fee covers a careful intake, a deliberate match to the right practitioner, availability between sessions when you need it, and a level of care most practices don't offer. You're paying for the work to be done well.
Do I have to commit to a set number of sessions?
For most of our practitioners, no. There's no contract and no required package — you meet for as long as the work is useful, and you can adjust the pace or step back when the time is right. Our work with teams & organizations usually includes a contract.
How am I billed — per session, or up front?
Most practitioners bill per session — nothing to buy in advance, you pay as you go. Our work with teams & organizations has different payment terms.
Sessions & privacy
How long and how often are sessions?
Most sessions run about 50 minutes. How often depends on your goals — many people start weekly, then adjust as things move.
Are sessions in person or virtual?
Sessions are primarily in person, and we're happy to be flexible when you need it. We do recommend your first session — the intake — be in person whenever possible, since that's where the working relationship gets built.
Can I reach you between sessions?
Yes, within reason. Support doesn't always wait for your next appointment, so there's room to check in between sessions when something comes up.
What if my match isn't the right fit?
Bring it to us. The relationship is a big part of what makes the work effective, so we don't move people around lightly — staying with one practitioner is usually what carries things forward. If something feels off, tell us early and we'll work through it together.
Is what I share private?
Yes. What you tell us stays between us, within the limits the law requires. For younger clients, we'll be clear up front about what's shared with parents and what stays in the room.
What's your cancellation policy?
We ask for 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. Life happens — just give us a heads-up so we can offer the time to someone else.
